At 37, Bogolo Kenewendo Becomes Africa’s Youngest Minerals and Energy Minister in Botswana’s Historic Appointment

Botswana has appointed 37-year-old economist Bogolo Joy Kenewendo as its new Mines Minister, marking a progressive move to drive greater value from the nation’s diamond wealth. President Duma Gideon Boko selected Kenewendo to spearhead efforts that build on a recent agreement with De Beers, aiming to ensure Botswana secures a fairer share of its diamond profits.

Botswana’s New Approach to Mining

President Boko announced the appointment in Gaborone on Thursday, introducing Kenewendo as part of his fresh cabinet lineup. This selection follows the appointment of Deputy President Ndaba Gaolathe as Finance Minister, underscoring a broader economic agenda focused on sustainable growth.

Who is Bogolo Joy Kenewendo?

Kenewendo’s background in trade, finance, and public policy brings a wealth of experience to her new role. Her career highlights include:

  • Former Trade Minister: As Botswana’s Minister of Investment, Trade, and Industry, Kenewendo advanced key economic policies and initiatives.
  • Board Leadership: Kenewendo serves as Chair of Bank Gaborone and sits on other boards, including the Africa Free Trade Area Adjustment Fund Corporation.
  • Policy Adviser: She advises international bodies on trade and economic development.

“Bogolo’s expertise and dedication make her a vital asset to Botswana’s efforts to maximise its diamond industry’s potential,” said President Boko.

Expanding Influence on the Global Stage

Kenewendo’s impact goes beyond her national duties. She has contributed to global discussions on economic policy, serving with organisations such as:

  • United Nations and World Economic Forum: Kenewendo has advised the UN on digital cooperation and gender equality and serves on the WEF’s Trade Advisory Group.
  • Honours and Recognition: In 2022, she was named to TIME magazine’s “TIME100 Next” list, recognising her influence as a forward-thinking leader.

As Mines Minister, she is expected to shape Botswana’s diamond policy with a focus on equitable wealth distribution and sustainability.

What’s Next for Botswana?

Kenewendo’s appointment signals a new chapter for Botswana’s mining sector. Her approach promises to bring renewed focus to resource management and economic development, enhancing the diamond industry’s role in securing a prosperous future for Botswana’s citizens.

“Our natural wealth should build a secure and prosperous future for every Motswana,” Kenewendo has said of her vision for the country.

This strategic appointment marks a significant step in Botswana’s journey to ensure its diamond industry serves as a foundation for long-term growth.
