ARE YOU HAVING CHALLENGES GETTING WORK? TRY THIS.

A short story

My friend was looking for work in a particular sector.

So he sent his resume to a few companies, but he never heard back.

After reading through his intent during one of our conversations, I advised him to use the “Third Door” strategy, which I personally used a few years ago to secure a graduate training program in a top advertising agency during my undergraduate years.

He was certain that his knowledge of social media management and digital marketing would be beneficial to the companies he had chosen.

Many of the businesses were experiencing difficulties.

He began by auditing the company’s website and social media accounts and suggesting ways to improve its presence.

He revealed his findings in the CEO’s Instagram direct message.

He was called back two days later.

He is now a full-time employee of them.

The defaults approach of job seekers

Option 1: You can apply for a job through the front door, which entails waiting to hear back for an interview after submitting a resume and cover letter to the human resources department in person or electronically. Consider the possibility that your resume will be discovered among the piles. Unless there is active recruitment, these letters are rarely read past the receptionist.

Option 2: The second strategy employs the contentious “back-door” strategy. A powerful individual, a cousin, or a friend can help you bypass the line by providing you with immediate access to a job. You have come highly recommended by an influential person, so you are very likely to be hired.

Try the third-door strategy

Consider how relieved a CEO would be if the ideal candidate for the position approached them without the need for an advertisement, a lengthy CV, or a time-consuming interview.

The third method is to use social connections to contact someone who can directly hire you. It is more similar to direct selling. There are no middlemen. On a typical day, you may need to schedule a meeting with the people who decide who gets hired at a company, but social media levels the playing field for everyone.

Almost everyone, including Presidents, diplomats, Fortune 500 CEOs, and C-Suite executives, is on social media.

As job seekers, we must be creative in our use of social media to stand out in an overcrowded labour market. Their emails are inaccessible, but their social media accounts, such as Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn, are active.

How to use the third door strategy

Because decision-makers are the intended audience for this direct approach, caution is required.

First, you must improve your ability to convey value in a concise manner. Consider the opening message to be a cover letter or elevator pitch. Establish your worth to the company or hiring manager and get into the situation as soon as possible. You must have something to offer and, if possible, evidence to back it up.

Second, make certain that your request is clear. Sending a message with an undefined job request at random will have no effect. Be direct and explain who you are, what you can do for them, and why they should hire you. Make your request as creative as possible.

Finally, if you have the luxury, you can use a baiting strategy by offering your services for free or for a limited time. The goal is to get a foot in the door and attract attention. The caveat is that this practice can occasionally normalize unpaid work, which can lead to more serious systemic issues with workplace inequality. When people don’t value your services, know when to leave.

Keep in mind, however, that after you send a direct message, the recipient is more likely to check your social media profile before deciding whether or not to take your request seriously. The initial test must be passed. Before you try this, get your house in order because your online persona is revealed by your profile and activity.
