Edward Obeng-Kenzo Takes Over as Acting Chief Executive of Volta River Authority

Edward Ekow Obeng-Kenzo, an experienced engineer with more than 20 years in the energy sector, has taken the helm as Acting Chief Executive of the Volta River Authority (VRA). His appointment, effective 5 February 2025, marks a pivotal moment for the organisation as it navigates Ghana’s evolving energy landscape.

A Leader with a Proven Track Record

Before stepping into this role, Obeng-Kenzo served as Deputy Chief Executive for Engineering and Operations. Over his 24-year tenure at VRA, he has held key leadership positions, including:

Director of Thermal Generation – overseeing the efficient operation of VRA’s thermal power plants.

Plant Manager at the Tema Thermal Power Complex – ensuring reliable power generation and system stability.

Project Manager for the Tema Thermal 2 Power Project – spearheading the installation of a 49.5 MW Siemens Emergency Power Plant.

Obeng-Kenzo holds a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and a Master’s in Public Administration from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST). A member of the Ghana Institution of Engineering, he is highly regarded for his technical expertise and leadership in power generation.

A Vision for Growth and Sustainability

During the handover ceremony, Obeng-Kenzo reaffirmed his commitment to operational excellence and innovation.

My focus is on enhancing efficiency and advancing sustainable energy solutions to position VRA as a leader in Ghana’s power sector,” he stated.

As Acting CEO, he will oversee critical areas, including hydro and thermal power generation, renewable energy, and strategic projects. His leadership will prioritise energy reliability while accelerating the transition towards cleaner, more sustainable power sources.

Steering VRA Through Organisational Changes

Obeng-Kenzo’s appointment follows a government directive while the VRA board awaits reconstitution. Until then, he will lead in an interim capacity. Outgoing CEO Emmanuel Antwi Darkwa expressed confidence in his successor’s ability to drive the organisation forward.

“Edward has been instrumental in shaping VRA’s operational strategy. I have no doubt he will continue to build on our progress,” Darkwa remarked.
