Mauritius Opposition’s Landslide Victory: Ramgoolam’s Return and Promises of Change

The opposition coalition party of Mauritius, Alliance de Changement (ADC), led by Navin Ramgoolam, has achieved a stunning victory in the recent general election, securing 62.6% of the votes and winning 60 out of 62 legislative seats. This outcome signals a significant shift in the political landscape of Mauritius, marking Ramgoolam’s return as Prime Minister for the fourth time.

The incumbent Prime Minister, Pravind Jugnauth, acknowledged his defeat, stating that his political alliance faced a “huge defeat.” In his victory speech, Ramgoolam emphasised his commitment to change. “My first action will be to dismantle the country’s spying system so that Mauritians can speak freely,” he declared.

The election commission confirmed the results on Tuesday, with the ADC emerging as the clear front-runner. Ramgoolam, a seasoned politician who has served as Prime Minister three times before, celebrated this momentous win and expressed his determination to implement significant reforms.

“I’ll prioritise dismantling the ‘spying system’ to ensure that Mauritians can express themselves without fear,” he said, highlighting a new direction for civil liberties and government transparency. Jugnauth, who has been in office since 2017, accepted the results with grace. “I did my best for my country, but it’s clear my political alliance was not favoured this time,” he remarked.

The ADC’s overwhelming victory reflects a strong desire for change among Mauritians. Voters are looking for a government that addresses critical issues such as economic growth, social welfare, and reforms in governance.

As Ramgoolam prepares to take office once again, his promise to eliminate the “spying system” is generating excitement and anticipation for a more open and accountable government in Mauritius.
