In a heartfelt response to the urgent humanitarian needs stemming from the ongoing spillage from the Akosombo Dam, the Board and Management of the Volta River Authority (VRA) have allocated an additional ten million cedis (GHS10,000,000.00), making it a total of GHS20 million, to strengthen their efforts in providing essential relief items to those affected by the controlled water spillage from the Akosombo Dam.
Under the leadership of Emmanuel Antwi-Darkwa, the Chief Executive of the VRA, the Authority is implementing comprehensive measures to address the challenges brought about by the controlled water spillage. The areas now encompass the Central, North, and South Tongu Districts, as well as Ada East, Anlo, Keta, Lower Manya Krobo, Shai Osudoku, and Asuogyman Districts.
As part of the ongoing relief effort, Mr. Emmanuel Antwi-Darkwa, accompanied by VRA officials, recently visited one of the impacted communities in the North Tongu District. During his visit, he engaged with community members, expressed empathy for their situation, and supervised the distribution of relief items, including boxes of solar rechargeable lamps. These solar lamps serve a dual purpose, providing illumination and a means of charging electronic devices, which is invaluable during these challenging times.
The Chief Executive during an engagement with the media said the Board and Management have explicitly earmarked the additional ten million cedis for the acquisition of essential relief items, bringing the total commitment to GHS20 million. He emphasised that it is not meant for disbursement to the affected individuals. Emmanuel Antwi-Darkwa further underscored the Authority’s commitment to ensuring that each contribution is directed exclusively towards addressing the immediate needs of those impacted by the controlled spillage.
The VRA has already, as part of their humanitarian efforts, delivered water storage tanks, furnished the North Tongu District health directorate with essential medical supplies, and established an emergency health centre stocked with critical medical provisions. Additionally, they have replaced a submerged water pump at Aveyime, ensuring a consistent water supply to the affected areas.
The VRA’s extensive relief efforts also encompass the daily provision of food and water at designated safe havens, as well as the distribution of mobile toilets, effectively addressing the immediate needs of those impacted by the spillage.
The VRA’s remarkable commitment to the welfare of those affected by the Akosombo Dam spillage is a testament to their dedication to the communities they serve. With the additional funding now in place, a total of GHS20 million, they are well-prepared to further alleviate the suffering of the affected individuals and extend a helping hand during these challenging times.
